Добавлен 29 мар 2020
We are Alex & Elaina, and we started this channel to share all the projects we take on in pursuit of living sustainable, financially independent lives.
We are currently self-building our first home (garage apartment) on 6 acres of beautiful land that we purchased in 2020. We are documenting it every step of the way!
Follow our journey here on RUclips and @masondixonacres on Instagram! We also have a website, www.masondixonacres.com.

Another life lesson learned the hard way on this week's video 😅
Do you have any experience with subsurface drainage? What would you have done differently?

And then the siding guy adds 10 thousand nails on top of the 5 thousand used to install it
These kids do everything backwards these days. Should’ve married her first before all of this house crap. Nothing like building a home for a woman who could then say no, or say yes out of obligation because you’ve invested too much. 🤷🏼♂️
we have a sealant in a small baskets, and it allowed to apply with a brush. Special waterproofing sealant what doesn't block water viper. We use it to cover mounting foam in the gap between window and construction. Sealant "A" water and viper proofing for internal isolation and sealant "B" waterproofing only for external use.
Great ideas! Im thinking about learning how to install my soffit and fascia myself soon.
Nothing is perfect. Engineers. Seriously, all of us will die. It's just a building. Rich Americans, we just whining about nothing.
I decided to not to rent or buy, instead prefer to pay my monthly gasssss ⛽ bill, which guarantees me continues gas and nooooo interruption at allll 😂😂😂

how's this work with water?
Does the tranny have any zerks grease fittings?
Why is it called "Mason Dixon" Acres?
If you had a PO Box in your contacts viewers could send stuff to you without revealing where you actually live.

Garage?... to most of us in the UK that would be a nice sized house.
Drum clips for a px229 9mm
Hmm… looks like an economical form of building, and if funded by proceeds of continuous full time employment as stated it shows persistence and a strong relationship. Neither look like builders/land management types. I wonder what it cost, I built mine roughly this size as shown solar off grid etc for about 20k, but I did actually build everything myself without hiring people.
Online, it appears only the DeWalt brand of 20V chainsaws that work, and the other brands are too weak. If you have to cut a small diameter tree, a cordless 20V circular saw should be okay. DeWalt must be hiring some Walt Disney 'physics' help to get a better 20V chainsaw than the other brands, which are only dangerous toys.
hugely labor intensive, but looks great!
Great video! Thank you for all the explanations for the choices you made. Question- with your tubing closer to the surface of the slab, what have you done to ensure that you don't penetrate the pex when you anchor down the bottom member of your interior walls?
White zip ties aren't UV resistant but you probably know that by now
Still holding fine!
How could you afford that?
2 engineering jobs
@@MasonDixonAcres ok nice that also explains the building process, thanks for the answer ;)
There is no way they both built this on their own and without external help. I have a construction building firm and some of the detail they showed isn't something you just come up with or learn from watching youtube videos, you actually have to know how and why to do it. Still congrats to you both for completing the house, but as I stated before - this wasn't done by only the two of you without the assistance from others.
My thoughts too. I work in a building industry as a foreman. Mechanical engineers don't come up with some of those minute and detailed building tasks on their own, so yeah, I also believe there was an external assistance provided. But kudos to both for doing it!
I drafted the plans myself from scratch for everything from foundation to mechanicals. I had a structural engineering firm review for sanity and provide feedback. All the details on how and why are freely available online for anyone to learn if you seek it out. -Alex
I love home with large land ❤
For your Tyrol windows, are the grids bonded to the surface of the outside and inside panels? It appears so in your video. And are they made of the same material (RAU-FIPRO uPVC) as the frame? Thanks for you time.
Inspirational work but why put the AC so early?
great video thanks
The contractor I used to work for used preferred LP over Hardy because in his experience the LP held up better to wind than Hardy. Wind would work the nails loose over time. Its possible they missed something in the installation instructions but as someone said in another comment quote, "Some of JH install recommendation is not even reasonable on what they call for so I had a rep out on the proper screw/nails that should be used". We installed hardy once when I worked there.
So sad to see after all that great work you guys did.
She probably does know what 6 inches looks like 😬🥴😅

Nice Project but with time Mouse in walls
Using air to pressure test PVC is a bad idea, positive air pressure is combustible and PVC drain lines are not ready for pressure which could in turn lead to an exploding sort of pipe bomb. Never exceed 5 PSI. Your best bet is to use negative air pressure AKA suction and watch your gauge to test for leaks. Next time just use it 4-in plug instead of that insert bladder thing
Instead of buying topsoil, get free wood chips delivered by local tree service companies and put down a very thick layer. Watch them break down to enhance the soil and plant a forest of various edibles all around: fruit trees, shade trees, and wind-block trees on the north side, etc. BrickSaver LLC
We actually did have several loads dropped off at the beginning of the project! They worked great for keeping mud down and did break down a little but not quickly enough to plant grass in
I'm in SW Florida. Built a trellis with PVC pipe, steel fence posts, and wire lattice. Started growing Luffa seeds in April and by June the vines were 12 feet tall and already had flowers and fruit. Full sun, lots of water. Now I have lots of fruit growing. So much fun. Thanks for all your suggestions.
James hardie is a dirty dog shit company
Nothing beats fluorescent lights for seedlings. NOTHING. (for indoor growing). 😊

thats not a house, its a Carton... when do americans learn to built with STONES and STEEL and CONCRETE????? your basicly building planes disguised as housing
And here I am moaning at the idea of doing laundry. You baffle me 👀💪👍
now i dont trust these shows. bought them and everything didnt grow they all died.my plants and my seeds all dead thanks to that. now i new why they reduced it to less then half. hope u not like my niece. she gets everything foir free with a good rating then sells the stuff on her site. still think u are great.
Where did you get your cattle panels? 😊
I think it's important to mention that on the flexivolt batteries, running it on a 60v tool like this gets you a 1/3 of the ah on the sticker, so the 12ah battery is actually 4 amps on a 60v tool. DeWalt doesn't make that super clear (of course) for people like me who are damn near illiterate when it comes to that stuff.
Alex, it was nice meeting and talking with you today. You have a wonderful property that's going to keep getting better with time. Take care---Jimmy
Great meeting you as well! It will certainly be a life long work in progress 😅 looking forward to following your guys next adventure as well!
Did you wind up installing the heat strips or was it sufficient enough without them?
Who would have thought that poopy butt would make for great content 😂
Fantastic job! Congrats! >:D< <3
Ever heard of electrolytes, stainless steel screws on galvanized makes current and the weakest metal will eat away, learned it with boats and useing stainless steel nails with aluminum fascia, lve been building houses for 45 years and I know from experience all the mistakes you have made with just this wall thinking you know more than engineers and manufacturer,, yes it was a big mistake applying the membrane the way you have ad well as 2 layers of wire screen and people are seeing this thinking its proper, even your slab pour , l can give you many reasons not to do it that way,, lve built over 50 homes and never had a call back.
